How to Manage Type 1 Diabetes with Your Diet

One of the first things people learn when diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes is the importance of a diabetic diet plan. A well balanced diabetic diet is essential for good health and it must be balanced and timed along with both activity and insulin levels.

Type 1 diabetes is more commonly referred to as juvenile diabetes as it is most common in children and young adults. This can present even more of a challenge because getting youngsters to follow a healthy nutritious diet can be difficult. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources, programs, assistance, and information on helping families adjust when one or more members have diabetes.

Blood Sugar Level Fluctuations

Certain foods cause blood sugar levels to increase. At the same time, activity and exercise combined with insulin cause the levels to decrease. The degree of increase in blood sugar depends on what the specific food contains, and carbohydrates are what cause levels to increase the most. Fats and proteins do not have so much an effect as carbs do in the diabetic diet.

The Simplicity of a Type 1 Diabetes Diet Plan

When first diagnosed, diabetics immediately begin to question what they can and cannot eat. The truth is, they can eat just about anything so it is not a condition that means they have to feel denied or restricted regarding food.

It does take a bit of training to understand what you can eat, and how much and how often you can eat it. Once that is understood, the Type 1 diabetic diet plan is not difficult to follow at all as long as the basic concepts are kept in mind and adhered to. The important things to remember are:

* Make healthy food choices whenever you eat
* Know which foods raise glucose levels and how to control your intake of them
* Know which sweets are allowed and the rules to follow regarding sugar intake
* Know the difference between bad and good fats
* Learn how to season and flavor foods without excess sodium and unhealthy fats
* Know the diabetic super foods for a daily boost of nutrients, fiber, and vitamins

Following a diabetic diet does not have to be bland and boring. The same holds true of a weight loss diet. Nutritious and healthy foods can actually taste quite good, and with the right diabetic recipes, you'll easily see that once the basics of the diabetic diet are mastered, the rest is just a "piece of cake."
